Sunflowers, Switzerland 1988 |
| After a close call with an agitated lion in Tanzania, I was ready for some more cooperative subjects. I found them in a windswept field in Switzerland. On my way back home from Africa, I spent some time wandering through Europe in a rental car. I had a loosely devised plan of trying to find some interesting cows to photograph, and as it turned out, I found more than my share. But I also happened upon this beautiful field of sunflowers, which seemed almost as overwhelming as the high peaks of the Alps that surrounded me that day. After I took a few photographs of these vibrant flowers, I breathed in the fresh mountain air and felt fortunate to have found such a beautiful scene. And unlike the lion, these subjects didn't have sharp teeth and claws and a taste for nosy photographers. |
