Lion, Kenya, Africa 1988 |
| In Kenya, the wildlife have become accustomed to the presence of human beings. To attract this lion's attention, my guide Tom pulled out his tape recorder, pushed the play button, and released the recorded groans of the sated pride from the evening before. Suddenly, the big lion stopped in his tracks just twenty feet away, pierced us with those incredible eyes, and charged. Oblivious to the danger, I managed to make this photograph with my telephoto lens just before the lion leapt in our direction. After seeing the lion's charge through his binoculars, Tom flipped over the seat and fell into the floorboard of our vehicle. Luckily, our experienced driver gunned the idling engine, which turned the lion away. It was a heart-stopping experience, and later that night, I wondered if a certain lion entertained notions of finding our camp and having a certain photographer for dinner.... |
