Horse with Tongue, New Zealand 1990

The scenery in New Zealand is some of the most beautiful in the world. The lush, green hills and valleys seem to go on forever, and the people are friendly and full of life. As I was photographing on the roadside to Ulva Island, I couldn't help feeling that I was being watched. And then I saw him through the trees, gazing at me, and perhaps mumbling under his breath, "Another foolish tourist. I suppose I should smile." Well, I guess you could call it a smile. So I decided to capture him for posterity. The result seemed to symbolize the buccolic nature of the island and my memories of a land full of surprises.
