Bike Race, New Jersey 1983 |
| In 1983, I found myself soaking wet at an international bicycle race in Nutley, New Jersey. I was there visiting friends, one of which was an entrant in the race. My camera, as always, was my companion that day as I waited for the pack of cyclists to crowd into a dangerous turn. I positioned myself on a high point above the crowd, so my view of the turn would be unobstructed. From there, I watched the race with interest, witnessing the motion of the bicyclists -- the spinning wheels and the churning legs. The rain also added an interesting element to the race, for my camera, as well as the participants. Just as the pack of cyclists crowded into the turn, I captured a fluid moment of the race by using a slow shutter speed. From experience, I could predict that the effect of a slow shutter speed would result in motion. What I couldn't predict that day was that this entire pack of cyclists would tumble to the pavement seconds after I took this photograph. |
