Beautiful Fruit Dove, 1989

I've traveled all over the world to capture animals of interest to me, but I didn't have to go far to capture this beautiful creature. This preening fruit dove lives at the Memphis Zoo & Aquarium. Exotic birds make ideal subjects for the camera, but they can be difficult. With their twitching, erractic movements, it takes a great deal of patience to wait for just the right gesture. Although it's sometimes a routine procedure to record nature's vibrance with subjects such as the fruit dove, it's quite another thing to capture that extra dimension that makes a photograph compelling: a priceless expression.
