Berries in the Ice, 1994

It had been the worst ice storm in the city's history. I couldn't get to work because a tree had fallen into the driveway, holding my car prisoner. Suffering from cabin fever, I ventured into my backyard on the third day of the ice storm with my nikon camera and micro lens. The weight of the ice on the city's millions of beautiful oak trees had taken its toll, their limbs fractured and scattered everywhere.

I noticed that the ice had trapped the world around us. I saw these berry bushes in my neighbor's yard, and was drawn to them. As the thermometer continued to dip, I made a photograph. Suddenly, as I was looking through the viewfinder, I heard an awful sound over my shoulder -- a huge limb had crashed to the ground just a few feet away. My cabin fever vanished quickly, and so did I, back inside the house to the safety of a solid roof and my fireplace!
